Those backyard birds need a sip of water after they have visited your feeders!  They need to be refreshed along the way when they are migrating, and they need to bathe to keep their feathers clean and free of pests.

They may need to cool down on a hot summer day. It is especially difficult for birds to find water in winter when water is frozen.  Keep water from freezing with a birdbath heater if you are in a cold winter climate.

Whether you are purchasing a birdbath, or making one using a pot saucer set on your deck or in your garden, there are some special requirements for your feathered friends.

When you install a bird bath in your backyard you will attract birds that won’t come to your seed feeders. Watch for ground feeders and bug-eating birds, like hummingbirds, robins, woodpeckers, nuthatches and doves.

 You will be thrilled to see a bird splashing, spreading its wings while fluffing and preening its feathers in the fresh clean water you have provided in your birdbath !
 
But wait until you see a whole flock of birds competing for space, dunking in and out, frolicking and shaking their tail feathers, all trying to bathe at once !

Tips for a Successful Backyard Birding Experience

• The wider the better, so that many birds can bathe at one time. You will find that one bird bathing attracts others to join in the fun.
•  
• Birds don’t like water too deep, so make sure your bird bath is 2 ½ to 3 inches deep. Place small rocks in the bottom to provide the birds a place to land and wade. Also, the smaller birds want only about an inch or two of water, so they will appreciate a variable depth.
•  
• Try placing a branch above the bath to give birds a perch before dropping down to the water

• Consider using a Dripper, Water Wiggler or Fountain for your birdbath. Birds are attracted to running water and can hear it from great distances. Moving water also minimizes mosquito breeding in the water. 
   
• Look for a bird bath with a rough surface. Birds don’t want their bath to be slippery ! The shiny glass baths are pretty, but not for the birds.

• You can have a pedestal style birdbath that attaches to the railing of your deck or a hanging bird bath. Birds seem to prefer a birdbath that is out in the open and on a pedestal, but the possibilities are limited only to your imagination.
   
• Birds need water in winter, too! Birds will continue to bathe in winter if it’s not too cold, and they need to have a fresh drinking supply. If you live in a northern climate where water freezes in winter, you’ll need a heated birdbath or an add-on birdbath heater. As natural water sources freeze up, your backyard could become a gathering place for thirsty birds all winter long.
